Last night, President Obama took a break from the stressful task of superhero to watch the Chicago Bulls (hometown) take on the Washington Wizards (new hometown) at courtside. The game was delayed a few minutes as he entered…receiving a standing-O. I couldn’t help but hear the arena DJ playing some hip hop song as he entered. It should have been Mama Said Knock You Out. Maybe next time.

Perhaps my favorite part of the NFL Combine — scratch that…of NFL Network — is Rich Eisen. Rich ran his annual 40-yard dash after the festivities came to a close. Perhaps the best parts were the SimulCam™ clips of Rich going head-to-head with the athletes, including Darrius Heyward-Bey and B.J. Raji.

And into the NFL.
With the 2009 NFL Combine just around the corner, scouts will be focused on certain players…and surprised by others. Obviously draft prospects from smaller schools don’t garner the same attention as their marquee counterparts.
But some players don’t need prime time TV games to prove their worth. Not when there’s YouTube. High-school standout Sam McGuffie pulled in over 2.8 million views with his McGuffie Mixtape. Enter Jarron Gilbert of San Jose State. The versatile defensive standout played both DE and DT for the Spartans. What’s more impressive are his 22 tackles for a loss in 2008…the most of any player in the DIV-1A. The 6’5″, 280-lber made heads turn at the East-West Shrine game. And while he isn’t listed on any “Top 5″ defensive lineman lists…yet…he may be gaining much needed momentum going into the NFL Combine.
This video is no cinematic thriller by any means. But with regard to his physical abilities, there is some degree of lucidity achieved by jumping out of a swimming pool. If you’ve never tried it…well, I bet you couldn’t…unless, of course, you can squat 635 lbs and dead lift 655 lbs.
Just the kind of thing he’ll be able to put on display at the NFL Combine. This ought to be good.

As I spend days house hunting (there should be plenty with all that’s going on in the economy) with no luck, watching this Heineken commercial gives me a renewed sense of hope that the perfect house is out there somewhere.

What is it with thowing stuff at people lately? First on Monday Night Football (12/08/2008) on the post game show, Steve Young was welcomed by a beer cup — mid-sentence — and didn’t skip a beat. Way to go, Steve! What’s even better is Emmitt Smith’s ‘Oh no you di-int’ look after it happened.
Dubya has garnered the ultimate sign of disrespect this weekend when he was the victim of a shoe tossing. A journalist managed to hurl both of his Ramazan Baydan Model 271 brogues at the Pres. Only Saddam Hussein’s fallen statue was lucky enough to get such public display of aversion in recent years. Kudos to Bush for dodging those stinky projectiles. What I want to know is…how on earth did that guy get two shoes off?

Well, kinda. I thought the title was fitting since his dad — yep, Barry Sanders — probably drew similar references at some point in his career. Jr is a freshman at Heritage Hall HS, a private school in Oklahoma. On a reverse play during the Oklahoma Class 2A State Semi-Finals, B Jr broke one off 64 yards to the house.
Not bad, B Jr. I see flashes of senior, don’t you?

Last week, I wrote about Michigan women’s head basketball coach, Kevin Borseth, and his meltdown. I also added that he reminded me of Ed Harris…and apparently so did someone else. One of the DERRICH.com readers, Joe Sabia, was kind enough to send me the link to the video, which was added to YouTube over the weekend. Check it out.
