When Kodak announced the release of its Zi8 pocket video camera, the features alone created excitement in the pocket cam community. For so long, a Flip cam was eponymous with pocket camcorders. Kodak set out to change the minds of consumers by offering a superior product.

Kodak was kind enough to send me a Zi8 to tinker with. While I prefer black or silver — simple colors — my review unit was an impressive aqua blue. Regardless of anyone’s color preferences, the Zi8 isn’t ugly. But at first glance, it isn’t as striking as its Flip competitor. But it’s certainly an improvement over the Zi6. The Zi8′s big personality is what sets it apart.

It’s easy to differentiate the Zi8 from its competition based on its features alone: it films in 1080p at 30 frames per second (fps) and at 720p at 60 fps, electronic image stabilization eliminates fidgety filming, it shoots 5.0 megapixel stills, and it provides support for both Facebook and YouTube. There are a handful of other important features including help with low-light filming, face tracking, and compatibility with both Mac & PC operating systems.

Included on the list of “may or may not annoy you” is the Zi8′s built-in rechargable battery, which “may or may not” depending upon the frequency with which you use the cam. And the small red light signaling the camera’s recording status is a tad annoying, but nothing a little electrical tape can’t fix…and something that can be turned off on the Flip UltraHD. Add to the cost of the cam your choice of memory — the Zi8 has an expandable SD/SDHC card slot that can hold up to 32 GB. Personally I’m a huge fan of the built-in battery and the expandable memory option.

The Macro setting on the Kodak Zi8 is one of the features that sets it apart from the competition.

The Macro setting on the Zi8 is very impressive for a camera of this size. The stills above were taken at the same distance and using low light.

The external microphone jack is also a refreshing feature, which means a notable improvement in sound quality for your videos with the use of a shotgun microphone or wireless lapel microphone. The video below was filmed with my review unit for wine review site, 1337wine, using a tripod and an external mic.

You’ll also notice that the camera is constantly adjusting its lighting levels…probably a result of the whiteboard in the background. So, not the typical result of filming with the Zi8.

My only real gripe is with regard to shooting distance. There seems to be a fine line between just right and too far. For example, while filming a performance by my son’s class from the 2nd row, I realized that I could have afforded to move back another 2 or 3 rows. I was constantly panning back and forth to include the entire stage. But move too far, and the already average sound would have decreased in quality without the use of an external mic.

The digital zoom is only an advantage if you set the zoom prior to filming, otherwise you get a pulsing zoom-in action. And while the video above was filmed using the 1080p setting (with a tripod), I would argue that the ideal setting for handheld filming is definitely at 720p @ 60 fps.

There is no doubt that Kodak has succeeded in raising the bar with this pocket HD cam. And at $179, the Kodak Zi8 is certainly the ‘bang for the buck’ choice.

Digital distribution of movies is becoming more than just a convenience. Video on demand (VOD) technology is becoming the status quo. As video formats have evolved, so has the method of delivery. Reel-to-reel. BetaMax and VCRs. DVD players. High-definition Blu-Ray. And now delivery of videos goes beyond format. There are an increasing number of utensils to feed your video appetite. In fact, there is a large list of video on demand services. If you have a broadband Internet connection, then you’re ready to explore the world of VOD.

So, how do you choose?

I’m a DIRECTV customer as well as a Blockbuster.com user. I’m contemplating a VOD service as an alternative to my Blockbuster service. So, I decided to take a look at Blockbuster’s VOD service and compare it to Netflix. Pretty smart, eh? Yeah…I thought so too.

BLOCKBUSTER. I’m already partial to Blockbuster over Netflix, so naturally Blockbuster.com was the first place I went to get some details. According to Blockbuster’s current offer, when you rent 25 movies in advance — which costs $99 — Blockbuster will send you one of its 2wire MediaPoint digital media players. The box includes composite, HDMI and component outputs.

Unfortunately the information available on Blockbuster.com is routine at best — an electronic brochure of the service actually. So, I contacted BlockBuster with a slew of questions.

This blogger shares his pros and cons of the Blockbuster service and related hardware.

With the lack of information available on the Blockbuster site, I decided to email them for some answers:

Dear Derrich,

Roughly 2,000 titles are currently available. The library changes frequently.

The device upscales up to 1080i resolution if used with an HDMI connection, cable not included. Some of the titles, such as the IMAX titles, are compressed with high definition, but not all titles will be in such high quality. The device also only offers stereo only for the audio.

The prices range from $1.99 to a max of $3.99.

There is no long-term storage available. Rentals are only made available for a maximum of 30 days after download. Once you actually start to watch the movie, however, there is only a 24 hour license issued to play the movie as many times as you wish. The files are auto-deleted either when the 30 day period or 24 hour watch period expires.

There are no other fees or membership requirements to use the OnDemand service. Once you have the device and use the 25 prepaid rentals, if you never rent again..you’ll never be billed.

Please let us know if there’s any other questions we can help with.

NETFLIX. The Netflix website on the other hand was refreshingly informative about its offering. Heck, it even points you in the direction of the manufacturer, Roku, for a more in-depth resume of abilities.

Right off the bat, this thing is the epitome of ‘straight foward’. Box is $99 (MSRP). Buy it, keep it. If you already have a Netflix unlimited plan (from $8.99/month), then you’re all set. The terms and conditions isn’t a bunch of legal jargon — it consists of six bullet points. Your existing Netflix plan doesn’t change. The number of movies available on demand is limited to a little over 3,500. One blogger even went so far as to compile a list of Netflix On Demand movies. Netflix claims 12,000 selections; we can assume the other 8,500 or so are TV shows. More importantly, watching movies or TV shows instantly does not affect the number of DVDs you get.

Roku Player for Netflix (R) and Netflix on TiVo (L)—–

In addition to the Roku player, you can use the Netflix service with a number of other devices such as the Xbox 360, on a TiVo DVR, and a pair of Ethernet-capable Blu-ray Disc Players.

In addition to those devices, today LG announced the first broadband-enabled HDTVs with Netflix streaming software embedded directly in the TV, eliminating the need for one of the above boxes.

THE WINNER IS…. It looks like Netflix has found a way to marginalize Blockbuster. I’m tempted to take advantage of the 30-day free trial to see if I like the ‘DVD by mail’ service as much or better than Blockbuster. If so, why wouldn’t I make the switch to the company with a better On Demand product?

The bottom line is that Netflix rules the VOD battle.

While I test drive the two services, there are still some other VOD services out there for me to research such as Amazon Video On Demand, and other services available through gaming consoles such as the PlayStation 3, or the recently announced video distribution service on the Nintendo Wii…and, of course, Apple TV and Vudu for the “high-def only, thank you” videophiles.

It’s been awhile since two mobile phones have simultaneously captured my attention like the BlackBerry Bold and the Nokia E71. Like two prized heavyweight fighters…or MMA fighters depending on your disposition, these two devices come to the table with a number of strengths.

It’s hard to compare two evenly matched phones. Both don the QWERTY. Both wear the proverbial camera. Speed comes 3G. Both boast improved stamina with impressive battery life. And both operating systems still show great agility, but can definitely use a refresher.

Round 1: LOOKS. As the title might suggest, the E71 wins this round handily. The Bold is no sloutch. For the sake of comparison, imagine Jennifer Aniston (Bold) and Jessica Biel (E71). Both are women are beautiful, but one of them is likely to piss off your wife or girlfriend more than the other. When comparing pictures of the two [phones] online, I was misled in both instances.

The Nokia looked larger than it actually is, and the Bold smaller. The E71 is sleek with it’s stainless steel finish and neatly placed buttons. And it’s as heavy as it looks adding a sense of quality. The Bold is lighter than past QWERTY BlackBerrys, and is finished off nicely with a chrome bezel and a leather battery cover. The screens are virtually the same size…the Bold a tad wider by virtue of its physique.

Round 2: PHYSIQUE. Typing is pretty easy on both; but if you’re used to the somewhat staggered QWERTY on the BlackBerry, you might find the perfect grid created by the E71′s keyboard frustrating at first. But it’s definitely something you’ll get used to. The Bold is thick. You would think it is more substantial than the Nokia. But you’d be wrong. The E71 is heavy…in an impressive manner: one that suggests great quality. It’s definitely in line with my previous Nokias. I’m ending my nearly two-year relationship with a BlackBerry Pearl (don’t drop this phone), so the Bold and the E71 are much more impressive to me. Go ahead and toss these around.

Round 3: STAMINA. With all of the apps and functions (WiFi, 3G, antenna) on both phones, comparing battery life was nearly impossible to measure accurately (or I’m too lazy to do a proper comparison). BlackBerrys in my experience have always had remarkable battery life. Unfortunately all I remember about my Nokia N70 is how often I had it plugged into the wall. Not so with the E71. It takes alot to knock the E71 down. That said, the Bold battery was right on. The winner of this round is decided with a coin flip.

Round 4: COMMUNICATION. More specifically email. The BlackBerry needs no introduction. So far, my only issue with email on the Bold (using my Hotmail account) is that email reconciliation doesn’t work from both sides. While a deleted email on the Bold removes it from the device and my Inbox, a deleted email from the Inbox does not remove it from the device. A minor (and temporary) glitch, I’m sure. Meanwhile, the E71 was simply frustrating. Most freeemail geeks blame my issue on Hotmail. The only way I could get this email to my phone is to use a push service like Izymail to get my Hotmail on my Gmail, which is ridiculous. Even the latest Nokia Email service won’t spar with Hotmail. Booooo! This one goes to the BlackBerry.

Round 5: PAYOUTS. It’ll cost about the same for either. I bought the E71 unlocked through Dell for $349…and I picked up the Bold from Best Buy with a new 2-year commitment to AT&T for $350.

A proper conclusion to a comparison would be to declare a winner…but I digress. I’m hooked on BlackBerrys. Let’s get that proclamation out of the way. I love having instant access to my email. That’s the most important feature to me, which may be different for you. The E71 is handsome and will cause plenty of double takes, and it is very capable. And while there are many features I may have missed (GPS, radio, music, photo quality), those features I did discuss were at the top of my list. Ok. Fine. I’ll do it. My winner by decision is the BlackBerry Bold…by a tight margin.

Hey, Nokia. Get a better email service…and you win this one.

If you’re looking for a straight forward, no nonsense TV…this is it. I’m an “open box” junkie. So when I noticed the price on this TV, I thought for sure it was included in that category. But the Toshiba 37AV500U is a new TV, not ready for the OB shelf.

Toshiba 37AV500U: not just a pretty face

Before purchasing a TV, I like to see them in action…side by side…mano a mano. I compared this one to a 37″ Regza and a 37″ LG (both also new). The Regza was about $100 more and the only difference I could find was an extra HDMI slot. The LG was also impressive, but it was almost $300 more.

Aside from being aesthetically pleasing with its glossy black thin bezel, the Toshiba’s picture is sharp…crisp. Black screens are black instead of gray. And you’d never know it was only 720p without reading it on the specs first. But given that it’s only 37 inches, the resolution is sufficient. So far, I’ve watched everything from CNBC (moving tickers) to movies to San Antonio Spurs games…all in HD. Videophiles worried about response times and lag commonly associated with LCDs will be pleased (I’m using the HDMI connection). And the SD channels actually come through really nice compared to other HDTVs. Finally, the SoundStrip speakers actually provide clear and rich sound up to a certain volume. I expected it to sound like an alarm clock. But for a home theater setup, you’ll want to add speakers.

I’d rate this TV is a solid 8.0 out of 10.0. What the 37AV500U does lack in features, it definitely makes up for in picture quality and overall value! Like I said…this TV is easy to use, easy to hook up, and easy on the eyes!

But every now and then, I enjoy perusing the pages of a book usually on the recommendation of a select group of friends…all of whom I consider to be more intelligent than yours truly. Predictably Irrational is one of those books.

I had the opportunity to sample Predictably Irrational before its release date, which is today I might add. The book, which was written by Dr. Dan Ariely provides a refreshingly entertaining look at how we are fooled by irrational behavior, and how we can make better choices about our day-to-day decisions with simple strategies. Despite his big-ass experience (i.e. “Russell & Tate“), his approach certainly isn’t academic, but rather easy to interpret.

Chapter Three entitled “The Cost of Zero Cost” examines the way “free” items are “incredibly appealing” even though what we really want costs very little to begin with. For instance, standing in line for a couple of hours for a free meal at a new restaurant (I’m ashamed to admit that I did this when Chipotle opened its first franchise in San Antonio a few years ago), or falling victim to the buy two get one free gimmick when all you need is one. I remember while in college the credit card companies used to exploit our penchant for free t-shirts to lure students into applying for credit. These are only a few of the everyday experiences Dan Ariely discusses in the book.

I highly recommend this read. Of course, I got it for free. But that shouldn’t matter as you will find out in Predictably Irrational.

About Dan Ariely
Dr. Dan Ariely is the Alfred P. Sloan Professor of Behavorial Economics at MIT, where he holds a joint appointment between MIT’s Program in Media Arts and Sciences and the Sloan School of Management. He is also a researcher at the Boston Federal Reserve Bank and a visiting professor at Duke University. Dr. Ariely wrote Predictably Irrational while he was a fellow at the Institute for Advance Study at Princeton.

According to comScore, online spending was up considerably this year…19% over 2006 sales.

I’ve been in the market for a number of things this year. But because I curbed my spending after opening RETOX, my hands were tied…credit cards locked away. After reading an article my friend, Danielle, wrote about how Canon is the unofficial bloggers choice for cameras, I couldn’t help but conform to the masses. Circuit City was running a Black Friday special on the Canon PowerShot SD1000. I read a few reviews, a majority of which were extremely positive, and giggled at those written by the overly critical camera geeks. At $149.99, they had me at “Hello”.

Since I’ve relied heavily on my mobile phone camera for snapshots, I’ve missed the convenience and quality of a digi. Since I purchased the SD1000, I’ve used it frequently. The picture quality is great — relatively speaking, of course (you get what you pay for). Camera geeks can still appreciate this camera despite its lack of manual controls. And although it weighs 4.4 ounces, you definitely notice the weighty high build quality. Best of all, it’s small. It’s portability makes it perfect for capturing those “Kodak moments” like this one, which was taken with my BlackBerry camera.

Here’s a shot from my SD1000 of RETOX. I used this photo in a recent ad.

Photo taken w/no flash — RETOX BAR SAN ANTONIO

I’ve only experimented with the video feature once, and after uploading it to my laptop, I was satisfied…impressed actually. I’m convinced that this is one of the best — if not THE best — bang for the buck digis. Now all I need is a Canon PIXMA MX700 or any photo printer for that matter.

In today’s age of viral marketing, musicians all over have taken advantage of online networking venues such as MySpace and YouTube as a means of music marketing. But these aren’t the only resources for aspiring musicians to take advantage of. Artistshousemusic.org is a non-profit organization funded by the Herb Alpert Foundation that is charged with being an expert resource for musicians, students, industry professionals, and people interested in getting into the music business. Part of its guidance includes information on copyrights, grants, and music education associations. The organization provides access to a wealth of practical resources on professional development and research in music education as well as information on teaching music with the tools of technology.

Although the holidays are my favorite time of the year…beginning with Thanksgiving, of course…it is also a busy time of year for me. I try to make time to visit a handful of customers in person and deliver some sort of gift or greeting. Since I cannot make it face-to-face with many of them, I opt for greeting cards with handwritten notes and wishes.

CardDirect.com offers a large selection of Holiday Cards and a variety verses to appropriately express your thankful holiday wishes. They’ll even add your business name, company logo, custom imprint and envelope imprint in a variety of ink colors or foil stamps.

<img src=http://preview.cardsdirect.com/blend.aspx?&vy=22&vla=Center&iy=283&ila=Top&imprinttext=%3cimprint%3e%3cfont+fontname%3d'Lydian'+fontsize%3d'16'+fontcolor%3d'goldfoil'%3e%3c!%5bCDATA%5bEdit+The+Verse+Above...%7cAdding+Your+Own+Greeting%7cIs+Also+An+Option.%5d%5d%3e%3c%2ffont%3e%3c%2fimprint%3e&VerseScaleFactor=1&iw=530&pw=566&type=inside&vw=450&design=C0908&ph=405&verse=408HH&ow=436&color=goldfoil&ih=98&vta=Center&vx=58&ita=Center&ix=18&vh=234>

There are also helpful tips on Holiday Etiquette on their blog. For example, if you’re trying to determine whether or not to send Thanksgiving cards, here are three reasons to do so.

I hope all of you have a Happy Thanksgiving!

The holidays are hands down my favorite time of year. In fact, I’m so passionate about it that I can’t stand it when department stores sell and/or decorate early. Despite the commercialism, I still look forward to seeing all of the decorated homes; it never gets old. This year, my friend, Eddie, will be drenching his house with over 10,000 lights…all of which are LEDs. Good thing. I can just see the smoke coming from his meter.

Traditional incandescent holiday lights consume 80% (mini-lights) to 99% (C9) more electricity than LED holiday lights. LED Xmas lights will also last for more than 50,000 hours v. only 2000 for incandescent lights. Not only will you save money on electricity but you will save money on replacement lights too. LED holiday lights also operate at only 1 degree above ambient temperature so they do not heat up and become a fire hazard like most incandescent lights. Finally, LED lights are encased in a nearly indestructible epoxy plastic bulb, which can withstand abuse unlike fragile glass bulbs. Go to HolidayLEDS.com for more info.

Lauderdale and making the drive down Highway 1 to Key West, I thought about what it would be like to do it in style. The closest thing I found was an Exotic Car Rental Miami. They rent exotic and luxury cars in Miami and throughout the Palm Beaches. The fleet included Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Rovers, and many makes of convetibles. Call Prestige Luxury Auto at 1-888-513-9711 for more information. Oh. And I opted for a Chrysler Pacifica. Maybe next year.

Not often do I get an opportunity to try a product listed in PayPerPost. I mean, it’s one thing to sample the services provided by a web-based service (i.e. student loan consolidation information, web hosting); but when I receive a product in the mail asking me to give it a try, I couldn’t resist.

On Monday, I received two samples of Freeze It, which is an all-natural topical pain relief gel. All-natural? What’s in this stuff?

Aloe

Vitamin E

ILEX, an herbal extract from a South American holly shrub. ILEX is used around
the world in various health & wellness formulations. Helps to enhance the effects of the pain relief ingredients.

3.5% menthol – Pain Reliever

.2% camphor – Pain Reliever

The enclosed pamphlet also claims that Freeze It is “greaseless, stainless, and no lingering odor”. Anything with menthol has a lingering odor…or at least that’s what I thought.

Regardless, I thought I’d give this stuff a try. Considering I’ve had a number of products rubbed on my back and knees throughout high school and college — and post collegiate “ol’ fuhtbawl injury” rehab for a degenerative disk in my lower back — this might relieve my lower back pain. I volunteered a friend to act as masseuse. She can attest to the three claims above, and my eyes didn’t burn as if I just swallowed a large glob of wasabi.

The herniated disk in my back is not too severe. But it does cause pain to shoot into my hip right where my waistline and buttock meet. The pain relief lasted about an hour before the effects wore off. However, I say that loosely. The pain didn’t come back full force. And I was able to fall asleep before I could start experiencing any discomfort. I’d say this was a viable alternative to a few Aleve and a glass of water…and many other pain relievers on the market. And it’s relatively inexpensive. This stuff gets a thumbs up from me; I’ll be using it again soon.

I couldn’t help it! The frustration grew and grew. While the Samsung SCH-U740 arouses curiousities…a “crowd pleaser” if you will…I had a hard time warming up to the phone.

My main concern initially was whether or not I would be able to effectively use the “cramped” QWERTY keyboard. I have large hands; but the only character I had issues with was the “P”, which is located near a raised lump in the phone. The keyboard definitely caters to obsessed IMers. I hated the fact that I couldn’t find the parenthesis buttons. I like using smileys.

Using the Internet browser proved frustrating as well. I wasn’t a big fan of the Verizon’s VCast. Page downloads were relatively slow, and downloading images or other large files is slow. And many times, I received an “insufficient memory for this operation” message while trying to browse “busy” sites or download large files. Unfortunately, a MicroSD card does not fix this issue.

The battery was an issue for me. My previous phone, a Nokia 6682, had excellent battery life. I had to charge the Samsung everyday…and charging was slow. An overnight charged seemed necesary to go from one bar to a full 4-bar power supply.

Finally, my phone would turn itself off on occasion. I narrowed it down to a couple of reasons. If you close the phone with the authority of uber agent, Arie Gold, don’t be surprised to find that your phone is off after awhile. The issue also became a nuisance mid-text if my SCH-U740 had 2 bars on the battery gauge or less. While it never dropped a call, I lost the ability to IM…about 25% of the time when battery power was half or less.

If you want to attract attention with a mobile device or IM ur BBF, this phone will do that. But if you’re searching for something to replace your smartphone, step away from the Samsung.

BlackBerry Pearl 8100
If you are into candybar phones, this one is just pretty. I can hear Chris Tucker now…”DAAAAAAAAAAMN!”. Effortless email, integrated Wi-Fi, music player, and expandable memory up to 2GB via MicroSD feed the desires of both regular and business consumers alike.

While I haven’t had but a day to play with its features, the Pearl has more than I need. It took me several hours to get used to the 2-character QWERTY keyboard and the auto-text, which I’ve never used in the past. And after reading several reviews of this phone, I have a few other observations.

The 1.3-megapixel camera takes extremely crisp and clean pictures. I’ve already had several of my friends remark at the photos I’ve sent them via MMS. However, this requires that you have excellent lighting. Let’s just say that pictures in the dark exposes a noticable circle on your subject from the flash rather than more evenly dispersed lighting. That being said, there’s not much to complain about in this category.

The ringer volume leaves alot to be desired. It is not very loud. This is an issue for me particularly while in my car. I like to listen to my music or sports talk pretty loud. However even with the radio off, the phone is barely audible when the phone is on the “high” volume setting. And I’d rate the road noise in my car as pretty average. The quick solution to this is to use the “Vibrate+Tone” option in your phone’s profile. I keep my phone in one of my cupholders, and the noise generated from the phone shaking against the plastic is louder than the ringer.

Finally, just about every review I read mentioned an issue that has since been fixed…at least on my phone it has. The complaint was that the trackball silences the ringer when moved. For instance, if you have the phone in your pocket and pull it out, the ringer goes silent. That is no longer the case.

Here are some other third-party applications that can be used with the Pearl (taken from Wikipedia):

Beyond411 (formerly Berry411) is one of the most popular Blackberry applications. It allows for yellow pages/white pages searches in any location, amongst other features. It is also freeware.

Color Your Trackball: allows for six different color settings for the trackball, as well as a setting for cycling through all six colors. All colors as well as cycling can be set to “never” timeout.

Reviews on Derrich.com are primarily paid reviews. There’s no secret there. But sometimes, I feel the need to publish a review for an exciting new product or service that I’ve used. Before I make purchases, particularly of electronics, I always search for reviews by an end user. While it’s nice to read a review by an editor, or a manufacturer’s explanation of their product, reviews by consumers are first on my list. Recently, I wrote two reviews that have earned some noteworthy attention.

Infiniti G37 Coupe Review
I had the opportunity to test drive an Infiniti G37 Coupe about 2 weeks ago. I wrote all about the experience and included some pictures. Since then, my review has been linked on numerous G37 and Nissan forums. I have received a little over 1,000 hits (1,005 as of late last night) from Google searches on some variation of “Infiniti G37 Coupe”. Last I checked, my post was in the Top 10 search results for many of those variations…and #1 under “G37 test drive”.

Meguiar’s Ultimate Quik Detailer
I have virtually zero bad things to say, if any, about Meguiar’s Ultimate Quik Detailer since I wrote my review over a week ago. I snapped a couple of photos of its “Hydrophobic” effects on my car, which simulate the beading qualities of a fresh wax.

Shortly after I posted the review, I decided to forward the link to Meguiar’s. Within a day, I had received the following email:

Dear Derrich,
Let me be the first to thank you for taking the time to send in this link. That is a great write up, and if you do not mind I will be passing this on to other departments within Meguiar’s. If you have any other questions please feel free to contact me anytime. Have a wonderful day!

Thank you very much,
Ash Erickson

Shortly after I replied with an email just short of “Heck, yes!”, I received an email from its public relations company, that also represents other auto-related manufacturers. To my surprise, I was congratulated with a good amount of sample products from Meguiar’s and a variety of other manufacturers. My camera is kaput and I’m in the middle of changing phones (more on that later), so I can’t offer you pictures of these items. But the moment an opportunity arises, I’ll get that up.

There are only a handful of bloggers that write thorough AND interesting reviews worth reading. I’d like to include myself in that category, but that’s for readers to decide. Whether or not the review is sponsored, a good review (in my opinion) includes photos for depth and focus on the main characteristics on the product or service…and how those features benefit the user. And don’t hesitate to point out any fallacies. Those are the things that help consumers decide whether a product is right for their needs.

A couple of words best describe the 2008 G37 Coupe: seductive, thrilling…and “WOW” comes to mind as well. Gunn Infiniti in San Antonio received it’s first car a few days ago, so I decided to stop by and have a look. The photo is the actual window sticker with the word “SAMPLE” printed across it, and there are no prices listed.

I was immediately greeted by salesman, Adam Castillo. Adam’s knowledge of this car juxtaposed the credentials of the owner’s manual, and his sales pitch was about as thorough as any magazine review of the car with one exception in his favor: this would be a hands-on tutorial. He was quick to point out how the name was different from its “G35″ predecessor. If you’re not car saavy, the “G37″ moniker represents the larger engine (i.e. 3.5-liter vs 3.7-liter). And even if you already knew that like I did, you may not know what else the name signifies. In addition to added displacement comes Infiniti’s Variable Valve Event and Lift (VVEL) technology. This innovation allows the car to take advantage of the car’s power at every point of the powerband while maintaining optimal fuel economy and reduced emissions. Add to that a redesigned exhaust and intake…the result is 330 horsepower and 270 lb/ft of torque, which is about 20 more horses and 2 more lb/ft of yank. With that said, current G35 Coupe drivers may not notice a huge difference.

Although the car looks similar to the G35, Infiniti claims all new body panels.

What they will notice are all of the techno-geek features such as the touch screen nav system. The system includes XM® NavTraffic, which displays real-time traffic information to enhance your GPS. While San Antonio does not yet feature real-time traffic flow data, that capability is available for those communities that do, which equals 24 of 79 XM® markets in the U.S. and Canada. The “SAMPLE” also featured RearView Monitor and an available 11-speaker Infiniti “Studio on Wheels”â„¢ by Bose® audio system, three-way door speaker arrays with 10-inch door-mounted woofers. The 20GB system splits storage equally devoting 9.3 gigs of the hard drive to the car’s music storage. It even has a compact flash drive slot.

Put the Auto in “DS” mode for some F1 fun.

“I’ve seen enough. Get me some keys, Adam!”

It’s a miracle I even paid any attention to Adam’s presentation. As I slid into the seats, I couldn’t help but imagine driving this car down a track. I rudely began tugging on the magnesium paddle shifters and making engine noises. No doubt Adam was distracted by my giddiness; he immediately suggest I press the brake and push the Auto Start button. Suddenly the G37 was alive, and the sound it emitted was hypnotic. Responding to my delighted gaze, Adam exclaimed, “Wait until you open it up”. How can I pass up that offer?

My Maxima SE features a sport shift that allows me to up and downshift as I please. However, as it pegs the redline, it automatically shifts into the next gear. The G37 does not. So, on my first attempt at “opening it up”, I repeatedly nailed the 2nd gear rev limiter. After apologizing profusely to Adam, I didn’t hesitate to try again. As the five-speed automatic transmission neared its 7500 rpm redline, I tugged on the right paddle…a couple of times. And he was right…the car sounds tons better than the previous model. Very nice.

After gettting that out of my system, I decided to test out the automatic cruise control feature. When engaged, you can preset your desired speed…no acceleration necessary…and let the car do its thing. In the photo above, you’ll notice what looks like an infrared sensor in the front air dam. The G37 Coupe will slow down as you approach cars in front of you, and can apply up to 30% braking if necessary. There are three distance levels you can choose.

Steering response is great partially due to the 4-wheel active steering system. The car feels sure-footed in the bends. And the Akebono brakes worked great with virtually no fade in the pedal. That estimation is good from about 75 mph. With 4-piston calipers and 14.0-inch rotors in front, and 2-piston calipers on 13.8-in rotors in the rear, I think it’s safe to say this thing has ample stopping power beyond that.

The 2008 Infiniti G37 Coupe is available in three trim levels: G37 Coupe, G37 Coupe Journey and G37 Coupe Sport 6MT. The car I drove was the Journey model with the Sport package. If you’re in the San Antonio area, go see Adam Castillo at Gunn Infiniti or schedule an appointment with him at (210) 824-1272. A $500 deposit will ensure you get one this month…provided the one you want matches a model already ordered by the dealership.

Last year, some friends and I ventured off to Key West in search of fun and sun. While in the airport, I ran into some family friends who were en route to Jamaica. I’ve never been. And when we saw each other again several weeks after our rencounter…after hearing about how much fun their family had…planning a trip to Jamaica found its way toward the top of “places I’d like to visit”. Clear water, all-inclusive accommodations, and a vibrant culture are just a few reasons I could think of to head down there sometime. They even have golf courses…10 to be exact. Lucky for me, I shot a 72 on the front nine recently, so golf will definitely be last on my “things to do while in Jamaica” list. If you’ve ever been to Jamaica, share your thoughts and suggestions. I’m all ears.

The company developed its first device back in 1999 on Internet-enabled cell phones. Pretty nifty.
