Toshiba 37AV500U — An Impressive 37″ LCD HDTV

    April 20th, 2008 - 6 Comments »

If you’re looking for a straight forward, no nonsense TV…this is it. I’m an “open box” junkie. So when I noticed the price on this TV, I thought for sure it was included in that category. But the Toshiba 37AV500U is a new TV, not ready for the OB shelf.

Toshiba 37AV500U: not just a pretty face

Before purchasing a TV, I like to see them in action…side by side…mano a mano. I compared this one to a 37″ Regza and a 37″ LG (both also new). The Regza was about $100 more and the only difference I could find was an extra HDMI slot. The LG was also impressive, but it was almost $300 more.

Aside from being aesthetically pleasing with its glossy black thin bezel, the Toshiba’s picture is sharp…crisp. Black screens are black instead of gray. And you’d never know it was only 720p without reading it on the specs first. But given that it’s only 37 inches, the resolution is sufficient. So far, I’ve watched everything from CNBC (moving tickers) to movies to San Antonio Spurs games…all in HD. Videophiles worried about response times and lag commonly associated with LCDs will be pleased (I’m using the HDMI connection). And the SD channels actually come through really nice compared to other HDTVs. Finally, the SoundStrip speakers actually provide clear and rich sound up to a certain volume. I expected it to sound like an alarm clock. But for a home theater setup, you’ll want to add speakers.

I’d rate this TV is a solid 8.0 out of 10.0. What the 37AV500U does lack in features, it definitely makes up for in picture quality and overall value! Like I said…this TV is easy to use, easy to hook up, and easy on the eyes!

This TV has a great HD picture. I hate to say it but I think it’s a better picture than my big screen Sony. If you are looking for a 37 inch HD TV buy this one. You will not be disappointed.

This TV reminds me of the 37′ Viewsonic at costco. I got an amazing deal on it. How much did this tv go for?

I believe it was around $850 at the time. Now it may be less.

I have several Toshiba products including TV’s and a laptop computer and have always find there products well prices and to be good quality.

Toshiba W42WL58P is perfect for a HD ready TV and has a clear picture with quality sound and all the inputs you will need plus a easy to use remote control with cool looks

Unfortunately after 16 months of service my Toshiba went bang but I would still recommend the product and will get myself a new Toshiba HD TV in a few years time.

Warning about MediaMarkt & E-Care scam.

    E-Care ref 538008

I Purchased the 42 inch Toshiba TV from MediaMarkt in Belgium and it went wrong so under the guarantee I asked for the TV to repaired and contacted E-Care in Antwerp who then picked the TV up some two weeks later.

After several more weeks I contacted E-Care who said they could not get the parts to repair the TV and would send a credit note to MediaMarkt so that I could go and get myself a new TV and since the credit note was ‘In the post’ and I had been without a TV for two months I paid a deposit for a new TV.

Day after day I contacted MediaMarkt to ask if the credit note had arrived so that I could pick my new TV up only to be told the credit note had not arrived and that they were chasing it up.

Today some ten weeks later I am still without a TV and have been told that the parts to fix the TV have arrived and I will be getting my old TV returned some time later this week.

Clearly E-Care and MediaMarkt have been telling Lies and using me as pig in the middle and have failed to provide a reasonable service in taking far too long to fix and return my TV and using deceit as a delaying tactic.

Does anyone know the legal position on this ?

I would avoid both companies unless you like being scammed like me.

Just fyi, maybe you intended it, but the expression, “mano a mano” does not mean “man to man.” It means “hand-to-hand,” as in fierce combat.

Thanks for the clarification, Dave. But that is precisely the meaning I was using. I was comparing multiple TVs…definitely combat happening…in high-def.
