When You Gotta Go…

College Football
Back on Sept. 27th, I was watching Boise State host Southern Miss on the “Smurf Turf“. All of a sudden the cameras are focused on a Boise State player in line to use one of the port-a-potties outside the field. Wide receiver, Vinny Perretta had to let it loose.

College Basketball
One blogger described the atmosphere best: “There was March Madness-level intensity, high-flying dunks, bone-crunching fouls, Tajuan Porter stop-and-pops, and K-State guard Bill Walker pissing himself…”. During a game against Oregon last week, Kansas State University guard, Bill Walker, apparently had to use the restroom so bad that he urinated in a bunch of towels DURING the game.

UGK Rapper Pimp C Found Dead

Earlier today, I received the news that rapper Pimp C was found dead at the Mondrian Hotel, located in Hollywood after L.A. County Fire responded to a 911 call. They arrived to his sixth floor hotel room to find him dead in bed.

R.I.P. Pimp C — 1973 - 2007

Pimp C, whose real name was Chad Butler, was also a friend. I had the opportunity to develop and maintain The Unofficial UGK Website since 1996. And despite the name, it was considered by UGK fans (and for many years by the group) as the official site. My brother and I attended countless shows with Pimp C & Bun B…otherwise known as the Underground Kingz…and we enjoyed each one like the first. My most recent UGK show was at the SXSW show in Austin, TX on March 15 of this year. This picture (right) of me and C was taken after the show.

While the mainstream music listener knew UGK by their collaboration with Jay-Z on Big Pimpin’, UGK’s truest fans regarded many of their songs as instant classics. In fact, the first song I ever heard by UGK in 1995 was It’s Supposed To Bubble…and I was hooked from then on. While UGK had many fans before me, I quickly made it a point to become a UGK “historian”.

Eventually, I decided to create an account on GeoCities in order to catalog everything I learned about the group. One day, I received a phone call from an unknown number on my cell phone. It was from Pimp C…calling to tell me he’d seen my site, liked the job I did, and wanted to help me make the site “official”. Before Wikipedia, before MySpace…CountryRapTunes (as we called the site) had the story straight from the artist, and it’s still there to this day. Pimp & Bun are without a doubt legends in the “rap game”. While they didn’t achieve the success that most would expect, they paved the way for rappers in the South to break into the mainstream.

My deepest and heart-felt condolences go out to Chad’s family, including Mama Wes…and to Bun B.

Hawaii & Illinois Break Into BCS Bowl Games…Missouri Gets Snubbed.

College football purists can rest easy. The National Championship won’t be a couple of cinderella squads. But a few did find their way into a BCS bowl.

The Juice is loose. One of my personal favs, Illinois, will meet one of my most disliked squads, USC in the 2008 Rose Bowl. In fact, the only thing I like about Southern Cal is Will Ferrell. Not only did Illinois post a 2-10 record last season, but the Illini, led by quarterback Juice Williams, surpassed the role of spoiler by beating all but one ranked opponent. But while I really like Illinois, I can’t reasonably predict a win over the Trojans. But I sure hope they do.

Hawaii on the other hand meets arguably its toughest opponent of the year in Georgia. There were some, including Georgia head coach, Mark Richt, that thought the Bulldogs were given unfair bowl placement following its October 6th loss Tennessee. But after winning 6 straight, they’ve certainly made a case for the big dance. Regardless, Georgia’s success should make Hawaii content with its Sugar Bowl nod. In a sense, this game provides a different “title game” scenario — an undefeated, overlooked Hawaii versus a bitter, deserving Georgia. Hawaii has an opportunity to live up to Boise State’s 2007 Fiesta Bowl performance and add merit and awareness to the mid major squads.

Misery Loves Missouri
Alot can be said about the Missouri Tigers and the “consolation prize” it received with its Cotton Bowl selection. Fine. Oklahoma is better. We get it. But are they not better than Kansas? I mean…Missouri did beat Kansas a week ago, 36-28. And Missouri’s only two losses came from the same opponent, Oklahoma. The Tigers also defeated Illinois. I think it’s safe to say that Missouri got snubbed. If there’s any year to argue FOR a playoff system, this would be it. But don’t get too excited.
