I’m not a huge fan of fast food, but I do have my moments. I will say that among the fast food burger joints in any region, Whataburger is hands down the best burger. It’s the closest thing to a real hamburger (as opposed to rubbery, fast food burgers). For those of you not in the South…well, you have no clue what I’m talking about. But if you make it down here, give it a try.
This morning I received an email from a friend containing 12 coupons to Whataburger. The coupons were for a vareity of items to be given away free. They included fried pie, medium french fries, breakfast on a bun, a 20 oz drink, and a burger. While it sounds like a good deal, the coupons are not valid.
It has come to Whataburger’s attention that an unauthorized, unreleased version of a proposed internet coupon promotion called the “12 Days of Whataburger” has been circulated via email. These are NOT valid coupons and will not be honored at Whataburger restaurants.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. Thank you for your understanding.
Here’s an example of one of those coupons.

Some things are just too good to be true.

In today’s age of viral marketing, musicians all over have taken advantage of online networking venues such as MySpace and YouTube as a means of music marketing. But these aren’t the only resources for aspiring musicians to take advantage of. Artistshousemusic.org is a non-profit organization funded by the Herb Alpert Foundation that is charged with being an expert resource for musicians, students, industry professionals, and people interested in getting into the music business. Part of its guidance includes information on copyrights, grants, and music education associations. …or Div 1-A as everyone still calls it. Even since I was playing at then Southwest Texas State, ramblings of a move to Div 1-A have resounded around campus. The only issue that drew more attention for a time was the name change, which obviously passed.
On Monday (November 26), Texas State University President, Denise Trauth, announced that an FBS referendum will be published to the student body in the Spring of 2008 to prepare for voting, which is expected to take place around March or April 2008. There were several issues studied by the Athletics Strategic Planning Committee that dealt specifically with the feasibility of such a move.
The Committee identified several areas where improvements must be made as part of a successful transition to FBS football including facilities improvements; a tradition of success in all sports, especially basketball and football; and athletics budget adequacy and stability.
The Committee noted the importance of a combination of additional student support from the Athletics Fee and comparable increases generated from several other sources, and recognized that a successful transition will require membership in an appropriate conference offering FBS competitors.
The move would likely take place in 2012.
There is still some question as to whether or not our fine institution can raise the funds necessary to complete the transition. Aside from increasing the Student Athletics Fee, an increase in both ticket sales ($210,000/phase) and in Capital Gifts ($10 million total to be exact) are expected as well. Now I’m no pessimist by any means; but if that’s the plan, why didn’t we try (it seemed so) to do this during our successful playoff run in 2005? Don’t get me wrong. I’ve been waiting for this for a long time as have other Bobcats.
Die-hard Bobcat fans speculate that Texas State will join Conference USA when the change is to take place. The Sunbelt and the WAC have also been mentioned. Obviously, these are all speculation. None of these have been suggested (that I’m aware of) by Texas State or the Conferences themselves. Fingers are crossed.

While Michael Wilbon is pissing the world off and San Antonio residents try to figure out where to watch the Cowboys Packers game, I’ll be hanging out at home with my son watching Shrek The Halls.
I’m a huge Shrek fan. I liked the first movie so much that I thought it was the best movie to come out that year…animated or not. I don’t think I was alone. The Academy Award for Best Animated Feature was introduced in 2001…the same year Shrek was released. Coincidence? You can’t give an animated picture Best Film, can you?
The best thing about it is there aren’t any voicealikes in it. It’s the original “cast” of characters. It starts at 7:00pm CST.

A tangent. Quickly.
Tonight, I was cursing the TV during the Monday Night Football game because I had to listen to Tony Kornheiser talk about how Erikk Lynne Williams (that’s Ricky Williams…I had no idea) shouldn’t be given a chance by the NFL and the Dolphins because he threw it all away. Whether or not you agree with that is irrelevant to my frustration. The fact that he repeatedly talked about it made my ears steam. He definitely reached “Sean Salisbury” on my pressure meter last night.
Anyway, I thought of Kornheiser because he and Michael Wilbon argued about the BCS versus the playoff system. I actually disagreed with Wilbon’s credulous point of view of the season. Has he even watched any college football this season? Parity, my friend…in its truest form. And the Big 12 Championship will be the perfect example of the “perfect season”.
Oklahoma comes in as a perennial powerhouse, and early on were contenders for the BCS Championship. Missouri not only enters the BCS Championship picture, but it does so with its first 10-win season since 1960. In its 117-year history, Missouri has never won the National Championship. So Oklahoma should automatically win, right? Just because? No? Yeah…I didn’t think so. Hey, Wilbon…you’re in denial, buddy. Get over it. The top teams are there for a reason. If they weren’t (if coaches and media didn’t think so), they’d be stuck out there in obscurity with undefeated Hawaii.
We already saw this matchup on October 13th in which the Sooners were victorious. And 41-31 is no rout. In a way, I’d like to see Missouri win. That makes the chances of Oklahoma playing LSU in a bowl game more likely. And I think that would be a sweet game.
Things To Do In San Antonio
Earlier this year, I made some suggestions on some downtown San Antonio destinations for the 2007 NCAA Tournament fans. But if you aren’t fortunate enough to grab tickets for this contest (I heard both schools already sold out of their allotments), and are looking for a place to watch the game…come plop down in front of our 120″ HD widescreen at RETOX. RETOX is about 10 minutes North of downtown.

I’m obsessed with Black Friday. Not the shopping part, but the consumer habits part. It amazes me how many people sit outside of a Best Buy (NYSE: BBY) and wait for only about a dozen super deals. Some Best Buy employees think its hilarious. Many stores have started to roll those savings into the weekend.
This weekend, I purchased a Canon 7.1 MP PowerShot SD1000 Digital Elph Camera w/ 3x Optical Zoom for $149.99 from Circuit City (NYSE: CC). By the the end of my shopping experience, I walked out about $212 poorer, but with a new camera, a 2GB SD card, a camera case, and a 24-month warranty. Not bad. But I took the lures, and chomped down hard.
According to comScore, Black Friday spending is up 22%.
More than $9.3 billion has been spent online during the season-to-date, marking a 17-percent gain versus the corresponding days last year. Online retail spending was strong on both Thanksgiving Day (up 29 percent to $272 million) and “Black Friday†(up 22 percent to $531 million), outpacing the season-to-date growth rate.
The sale of video games, consoles, and accessories is up 134% from last year. While flat panel TVs received the hype last year, this year has clearly been video game focused. Regardless of the focus, Black Friday is always the benchmark for retailers. It has historically been a fairly accurate forecasting tool for Cyber Monday and the rest of the holiday shopping season. comScore Chairman Gian Fulgoni believes that Cyber Monday spending will exceed $700 million. At a 22% clip, he might be right.
Some think the name Cyber Monday is dumb (I do). Other seasoned online shoppers actually believe that Cyber Monday is a joke. Not likely. The trend so far suggests that online retailers will have the last laugh.
Walmart.com Turns Cyber Monday Into Cyber Week
Walmart.com (NYSE: WMT) is extending its Cyber Monday sale through December 1. While this may not be a trendsetting move, certainly it will keep consumers’ attention. Huge Cyber Monday Savings at Walmart.com will turn into a week long shopping spree. Last year, Walmart.com pushed its toy promotions with $0.99 shipping. However, with all of the toy recalls this year, toy safety is a huge concern and are expected to affect toy sales this year.
