Week 2 College Football — Oregon Stuffs Michigan

September 8th, 2007 - - Filled in: Sports

Just a week after its loss to Appalachian State, Michigan suffers its 5th loss in a row to #29 Oregon — according to the Associated Press “their most-lopsided loss in 39 years”. Enough talk about upsets. This is just reassurance that Michigan was overrated in the pre-season polls this year.

Although Oregon’s defense is suspect week to week, save for their secondary, the Ducks did an excellent job of controlling Michigan RB, Mike Hart…”controlling” meaning he only rushed for 127 yards. I don’t care how badly Michigan sucks this season, I’m gonna watch just to see Hart run. Although he’s an ultra-shifty runner, which I usually correspond with the words “hesitate” and “EastWest”, Hart somehow finds a way to do it while maintaining his NorthSouth route toward the end zone. He’ll have fun against the Irish next week if he can remain healthy. Hey, Mike. Next time you guys are losing by 30+ in the 3rd quarter with no hope of winning in sight and your backup is trying to replace your gimpy butt, get out. We all know you’re a badass (that’s no joke). I can definitely respect the guy’s determination; but he was already hurt, staying in the game was a little too risky for his long-term durability.

After watching these two teams play in both Week 1 and Week 2, I can say two things with certainty: “There’s no hope for Michigan”, and “I’m addicted to quack”.

Dennis Dixon
It’s usually premature to make predictions of any kind before Week 4 in my opinion, which is why I don’t really pay close attention to preseason polls. The same can probably be said for Heisman candidates. But I can’t over how great Dennis Dixon is. He threw for 368 yards and a career-high 4 touchdowns in the Ducks’ win over Michigan. And he made it look easy. If I had to make one of my typical dissident statements, Dennis Dixon is the second coming of Vince Young…and Barrick Nealy. He’s not quite as elusive as Vince Young, but he’s definitely got some wheels. And his arm strength and accuracy resemble that of Barrick Nealy (who in the hell is Barrick Nealy). Dixon should definitely be an early consideration for the Heisman especially if he has the same effect on his team that Vince Young and Barrick Nealy did on theirs.

Odious Observations
I use the word odious only because I tend to make “out there” statements about sports (my friend, “The Human Thesaurus”, is cursing his computer screen). For example, when I tell my friends and co-workers that Appalachian State could beat Michigan AT LEAST 4 out of 10 times, I get that look of “yeah right” or “that’s really funny”. I generally do it to get under their skin, but sometimes I actually believe what I’m saying. :) Here are a few of those following Week 2:

  • Washington, Oregon, Clemson, and Georgia Tech are Top 15 teams. The Huskies in particular will validate me or make me a liar over the next 3 weeks.
  • When Michigan loses, it should no longer be regarded as an “upset”.
  • Why is Cal ranked #10?
  • Oklahoma and LSU will play each other in the Superdome at the end of the season. I haven’t seen more dominant teams than these through Week 2.
  • Only Wisconsin & West Virginia will make the previous statement null and void.
  • Get over USC already.

Disclaimer: I have not consumed any alcoholic beverages or other mind-altering drugs prior to producing this list.

Oh yeah…
It was great to see that Ron Franklin was doing a primetime game this morning. As I’ve said before, I think he’s the unofficial successor to Keith Jackson as far as college football commentators go. I just get goosebumps hearing the guy call a game…just as I did with Mr. Jackson. And if have to hear Brent “Capt. Obvious” Musberger again…
