So Appalachian State Beat Big Blue…

September 2nd, 2007 - - Filled in: Sports

To my friends, I’m known for my “out there” college football picks. I love picking upsets. I have to say, I’m not too bad at it. I would have never picked Michigan to lose to Appalachian State. But am I completely surprised? Absolutely not! I don’t get all the hoopla surrounding this upset in front of a crowd of 109,218…and I use the term “upset” loosely. After all, #2 defeating #1 in the BCS Championship Game is often regarded as an “upset” (i.e. Texas over USC). Appalachian State is a 2-time Division I-AA National Champion. Why would it be inconceivable for them to be able to beat — I don’t know, say — half the Top 25 teams in Division 1-A? This defeat should also be some indication of that pre-season rankings are worthless. Michigan is not likely a Top 10 team, but somehow they found themselves ranked #5. And in case you missed it, I’d bet the App. State guys were just excited about the fact that Miss Teen USA contestant, Lauren Caitlin Upton announed on the Today Show that she would be attending Appalachian State next year.

I’m obviously proud of the Mountaineers. I went to and played for a Division 1-AA school, Texas State University (we also made a run at the D1-AA Nat’l Champtionsip 2 years ago). I hope this defeat will debunk all of the doubt that some of the “lesser” schools have talented squads ready to blow somebody up when given the opportunity. It’s a good thing my ESPN blacked out with about 5 minutes left in the game. I didn’t have to listen to Mark May wreck any iota of possibilty that the Mounties were even a little bit capable of beating Michigan fair and square. Hey, Mark! I used to defend you against Trev Alberts back in the day when you actually used to give accurate analysis. If you won’t grant App State the respect they deserve, I know of a whole community in Ann Arbor that will.

WTF is FCS?
Are you kidding me? As of November 19, 2006, NCAA Division 1-AA was re labeled NCAA Division 1 Football Championship Subdivision…or “NCAA FCS”. According to the NCAA, the presidents believe the new nomenclature more accurately distinguishes Division I institutions for purposes of governing football, the only sport for which such a distinction is necessary.

All Division I institutions, regardless of whether they sponsor football, are in fact and should be referred to as Division I members,” said Board Chair and University of Connecticut President Philip Austin. “The only reasons for labeling are the need to distinguish the two football subdivisions for the purpose of governing the sport and to maintain separate statistics. The Board is stressing that the nomenclature reflect the totality of the Division I membership whenever possible and that the subdivision labels be used sparingly. Still, there are instances in which we need to use them, and we feel the new labels are more accurate.

Um. I still don’t get it. Leave it alone. It was fine the way it was. You can read more about the name change at I-AA.org.

It’s great for underdogs to win like that :D I don’t pay much attention to college football, but the other day I finally saw a childhood friend of me and my brother. He plays for the Huskies - #79 left tackle (Ben Ossai).

When he was recruited in 2005, the Huskies weren’t doing that well. I remember talking to him that they got a new got and they’re rebuilding the team. Last year they had a great season and this year should be even better :D
