Fisher-Price Recall Includes 967,000 Toys

August 1st, 2007 - - Filled in: Business/Consumer

That’s Nine Hundred, Sixty-Seven Thousand toys! Just about 2 months after the Thomas The Tank Engine recall for lead paint, enter Mattel to recall approximately 967,000 toys that contain “excessive levels of lead paint”. A majority of the toys are Dora, Diego, and Sesame Street figures. I don’t think my little one has any of these, but I can assure you we’re checking as you read this.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer products. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. (To access color photos of the following recalled products, see CPSC’s Web site at www.cpsc.gov.)

The recalled involves various figures and toys that were manufactured between April 19, 2007 and July 6, 2007 and were sold alone or as part of sets. The model names and product numbers for the recalled toys, which are all marked with “Fisher-Price,” are listed below. The toys also have a date code between 109-7LF and 187-7LF marked on the product.

What is so ironic about this story is that not more than a week ago they were being used as the New York times as an example of a firm that was manufacturing in China the right way.

They owned their factory, they used only approved suppliers, and it was their staff that QCed the goods.

Yet, as you can see they are blaming the supplier for using unapproved paints.

Pass the lead paint, and the buck.

My sis and I were just talking about this. My niece is a huge Dora fan. And she has many of the recalled toys. =( I’ll pass this on to her.

I posted about this too when it was released. I titled the post “Poison-Me” Elmo!

It is not surprising that this is getting so much attention…We are talking about children!
One of my colleagues posted about this at http://199.237.230.93/?p=26 and spoke about recalls in other industries as well. Check it out!

So that’s whats wrong with me?! I knew chewing the paint off my daughters toys would lead to no good!

First it was the window sills, now toys. Pretty soon there’ll be nothing to chew on!

Doesn’t surprise me though. I mean, does anyone think that China cares about what they send over? I’m sure the “Quality Control” isn’t what it should be.

Definitely frustrating, Don. I’ve starting chewing on my furniture, although I bet there is something in that that isn’t good for me either. *shrug*

Seems everything coming out of China is tainted these days — weren’t they responsible for killing everyones dogs a few months ago? I guess the natural progression is to start poisoning our children!

Indeed, Mike. Alot of the blame should fall on the U.S. companies that continue to outsource such manufacturers…regardless of the country from which they come. I’m sick and tired of scanning my kid’s toys everytime these warnings come out. I find myself reading the packaging at toy stores now.
