Thomas The Tank Engine Toy Recall

June 13th, 2007 - - Filled in: Business/Consumer

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, RC2 Corp. is recalling about 1.5 million Thomas & Friendsâ„¢ Wooden Railway Toys due to lead poisoning hazard. This one hits home for me since Lil D has a set of these toys…grandma and mommy are checking even as I type. Seriously, though. What toy company still uses lead-based paint? Scratch that. What toy company outsources the painting of their toys to China where they still use lead-based paint? Anyway, the recall involves wooden vehicles, buildings, and other train set components listed below.

Recalled Items.
Red James Engine & Red James’ # 5 Coal Tender
Red Lights & Sounds James Engine & Red James’ #5 Lights & Sounds Coal Tender
James with Team Colors Engine & James with Team Colors #5 Coal Tender
Red Skarloey Engine
Brown & Yellow Old Slow Coach
Red Hook & Ladder Truck & Red Water Tanker Truck
Red Musical Caboose
Red Sodor Line Caboose
Red Coal Car labeled “2006 Day Out With Thomas” on the Side

The front of the packaging has the logo “Thomas & Friends Wooden Railway” on the upper left-hand corner. A manufacturing code may be located on the bottom of the product or inside the battery cover. Toys marked with codes containing “WJ” or “AZ” are not included in this recall.

What to do. Consumers should take the recalled toys away from young children immediately and contact RC2 Corp. for a replacement toy. For additional information, contact RC2 Corp. toll-free at (866) 725-4407 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. CT Monday through Thursday and between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. CT Friday, or visit the firm’s Web site at recalls.rc2.com, or print and complete this return form.

This is huge. The Thomas toys are not some obscure line of playthings you only find sold at local dollar stores. Most boys go through a Thomas stage sooner or later. Even my daughter went through a Thomas stage.

Indeed. Mine has been in it before with just the show. Now he’s back in it with the actual train set, which he uses with MY old Brio trainset. Sheesh. I never thought I’d see that thing again.

Good question, Kylie. I don’t think Mike is on that list. And as far as I understand, you’re in the clear if it’s the plastic or metal version. These are for wooden toys. The best thing to do is call the company directly and find out what they say.

I’m not real sure, to be honest. I’m just going by the list they provided to consumers. I’m sure RC2 Corp can answer that for you. Thanks for stopping by.

I really don’t know if poison on Thomas Trains because my son played with these Thomas Trains when he was two years old, he never get any sick. because he didn’t chew all trains, He’s not like a dog’s chew! No proof if poison by painted….

I was amazed when I heard of the recall. My 6 year old is obsessed with Thomas, and has many of the pieces, movies, sets, clothes, etc. My three year old also enjoys them. How sad is it when my son tells his grandparents, “I can’t play with them, because they are made from lead paint.” From what I saw on the news, can’t this affect our kids later on in years. My son has been playing with them for probably 4 years now. And I know someone said the toys are not “dog chews”, but what about us parents that do have smaller children. Babies chew on everything, so what about my son who one of his first words was “Toma (Thomas)”. This is amazing. Thank you for letting me vent with you.
