All that talk about Social Networking yesterday got the gerbils spinning the wheels of the crude, yet refined Derrich…pumping out ideas. I was actually evaluating my social networking efforts, and then I got into an argument with myself over marketing Derrich.com, and — it was just ugly — I don’t want to talk about it. Well, ok. These 7 things are the vital to a successful marketing campaign via social networking.
- Viral. Think Flickr and YouTube. And Joost. Even Zookoda…and PayPerPost for that matter. If you don’t know jack about viral marketing, let Blake Snow tell you.
- Be A Broker. Reviews, blogrolls, link love. Just a few ways you can spread the word about your favorite blogs or showing respect to those that deserve it. Heck if you digg it, Digg it.
- Feed The Read[er]. Publicize your content and make it easy for people to subscribe to, and optimize distribution so that your content is properly formatted for all of the major directories and can be consumed by subscribers wherever they are. Accomplish this with FeedBurner.
- Buck The Trend. Following current search trends is particularly useful if you cater to a specific niche. While bucking the trend might be tough, you can get a head start by seeking out the hot trends and the latest buzz. Then promote it with relevant information.
- Reveal Your Identity. One of the most read pages on a blog in the “Profile” page. Let everyone know who you are, include a picture or two, and share your interests. Obviously not limited to profile pages, MySpace and Facebook are both great examples of a marketing tool that is quickly taking over online ad spending.
- Establish Credibility. Especially if you’re a niche blogger. Spark discussions and develop your brand. In online community, MyBlogLog, tagging is now available to both you and your readers. Start ‘em off by establishing yourself as an expert on X, Y, or Z.
- Build A Community. Build an online community, join other communities, and proceed to interact. Visit my communities when you get a chance: MyBlogLog and BlogCatalog.
Even businesses focus on social marketing. Joshua Porter points out 16 social features used by Amazon in its iPod product page.
