April Fools Fun Around The Internet

April 1st, 2007 - - Filled in: Random/Rants

April Fools Day has always left the opportunity for fabricated stories and dim-witted shanaigans. Just like that clock you set 8 minutes ahead just so you’re not late, you know it’s April Fools Day but still manage to forget about it from time to time. That’s what happened to me. I started seeing unusual happenings while browsing around my early morning spots. Here are a few examples.

Technorati
Our beloved blog directory, Technorati, has created anagram mastheads as its April Fools distraction. I was checking my updated Technorati score, and noticed “ho cant riTe” in the top left corner. Needless to say, I was offended…and after clicking refresh a few times, here are some more I discovered

Google
Google announced a FREE in-home wireless broadband service called Google TiSP. Complete with press release and answers to frequently asked questions. I’d go into detail, but it’s much better if you see it for yourself.

Google even had fun with Gmail by announcing a service called Gmail Paper. Maybe this will take some of the heat off of Al Gore’s electricity bill.

c|net
When I went over to c|net this morning, its news tab featured a bunch of manufactured stories including how the U.S. Government outlaws Windows Vista and White paper: Is the Internet dating market sufficiently robust to support a profitable “ugly people only” site?. Anyway, when you click on the links, you get the message below. See the rest for yourself.

John Chow dot com
For those of who aren’t one of the 5 million John Chow dot com readers…ok, actually it’s like a little over 3,000…he announced late yesterday evening that he would be retiring from blogging after selling his tech company, TTZ Media for an undisclosed sum of money. The company includes his beloved tech reviews and tech products site, The Tech Zone, which was founded in April of 1999.

Right now, I hate John Chow. Because I first read his post at about 3:00am CST (i.e. WAY past my bedtime), I was led to believe this was true (I was VERY tired) and rushed to begin writing him what would be a farewell address. Allow me to share with you my efforts.

In case you aren’t one of the hundreds of John Chow dot com readers, John announced his retirement from blogging today. John has been an inspiration to many bloggers. I started Derrich.com for a number of reasons, but reading John’s blog inspired me to take the next step. It was one of those instances where I told myself, “if he can do this, so can I” — and not because I thought I could do it better, but because he made it seem so easy…and he was always available to lend a helping hand.

I stopped there after I finally realized the likelihood that this was a farce. I hope you’re happy, John Chow. Come to think of it, this post in itself is fuel to the fire that is John Chow’s evil emanation. I’m certain that he is cackling evilly as he reads this. I hope you had your fun, John! I was gonna post a pic of you and the pigeons and everything!

In the event you are really leaving, John…what I said above, and bon voyage. Otherwise, I’m still pissed at you. *HMPF*

Hey Derrich, I don’t think John Chow’s departure is a joke man, the post was posted on March 31st, not April first? Perhaps I am wrong on this, but heck he could have sold his company maybe?

I was thinking the same thing. But then I figured he was catering to the readers in earlier timezones…all sorts of ideas as to how this could still be considered April Fools. Timing may merely be coincidence. Regardless, it’s amazing how he gets people talking.

I’m surprised the Google tisp did not get more attention on any blogs I’ve been to. It’s pretty funny.
Too many were timed right at midnite which made it a bit too obvious.
I have not idea how Kumiko timed her’s out in Tokyo.
I did see one minivan dragging a few cans behind it. Oldy but a goody.

[By the way, thanks and credit go to Derrich for the Google TiSP find. I came across it on his blog…]
