They're very reasonable to compare this year to last, but I don't think they should completely dismiss the effect of customers' past experience (including the video clips they've seen online with people literally getting pushed down and trampled). If you're not a teenage athlete who lettered in track and football, your chances of getting the laptop at half off retail are pretty slim. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
